Safeguarding and online safety

Like everyone, we've been appalled by the stories that are emerging across the country. It is completely unacceptable that girls are being treated in this way and we have a collective responsibility as education leaders to take a stand. We pride ourselves on being a highly inclusive family of schools, and whilst we have strong systems and controls in place as part of our work on equality, diversity and inclusion focusing on gender, racism, sexuality and disability, we want to make sure we are leaving no stone unturned in eradicating these insidious behaviours.

In addition to our existing practices, we are taking steps to ensure that each of our schools has the means to capture testimony from students - either anonymously or in person through safe spaces - so that there is every opportunity to uncover any issues, past or present. We all need to go further and shine a light on these issues so that they are brought out in the open and dealt with swiftly, including involving the police. To do otherwise, makes us part of the problem.

Lift Broadlands is committed to the safeguarding and welfare of all of our students.
In order to support those enrolled at the academy, we have a dedicated Safeguarding Team of trained professionals who can offer advice and guidance.
If students have any concerns over their own safety and welfare, or the safety and welfare of another student, they should discuss this with their Form Tutor, their Year Co-ordinator, Ms Allend Deputy Designated Safeguarding Lead or Ms Stone.

eSafety

Keep an eye on your child’s internet use including email and social media (Facebook, Snapchat, etc)
Check the history folder of your internet browser to check what sites have been accessed
Consider purchasing filter software or see if your ISP (BT, Sky, Talk Talk, etc) provide their own
Protect your computer with firewall/antivirus software

All staff at Lift Broadlands have had safeguarding training and are alert to the possibility of risks and any safeguarding issues. If they recognise a concern, are told about a concern by a third party or if a student makes a disclosure to them, they have the duty and the responsibility to make their concerns known to one of the designated Safeguarding Team.

They witness or suspect unsuitable material has been accessed
They are able to access unsuitable material
They are teaching topics that could create unusual activity on the filtering logs
There is a failure in the software or an abuse of the system
There are perceived unreasonable restrictions that affect teaching and learning or administrative tasks
They notice abbreviations or misspellings that allow access to restricted material

eSafety student guidance

Never post your personal information, such as a mobile phone number, home address, or the name of your school
Be aware that information you give out through social networking sites, instant messages, emails and blogs could put you at risk of bullying or harassment
Never meet in person with anyone you first “met” online. Some people may not be who they say they are
Remember that posting information about your friends could put them at risk
Never respond to harassing or rude texts, messages and emails. Delete any unwanted messages or friends who continuously leave inappropriate comments
Never give out your password to anyone other than your parent or carer
If you would not say something to another person’s face, do not post it online!
Only add people as friends to your site if you know them in real life
Think before posting your photos. DO NOT post or send semi-nude or nude pictures of yourself or anyone else. Personal photos should not have revealing information such as school names or location
Use the privacy settings of the social networking sites
